Acyl Radical Chemistry via Visible-Light Photoredox Catalysis

Visible-light photoredox catalysis enables easy access to acyl radicals under mild reaction conditions. Reactive acyl radicals, generated from various acyl precursors such as aldehydes, α-keto acids, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, acyl thioesters, acyl chlorides, or acyl silanes, can undergo a diverse range of synthetically useful transformations, which were previously difficult or inaccessible. This review summarizes the recent progress on visible-light-driven acyl radical generation using transition-metal photoredox catalysts, metallaphotocatalysts, hypervalent iodine catalysts or organic photocatalysts.

Enantioselective Electrochemical Lactonization Using Chiral Iodoarenes as Mediators

The enantioselective electrochemical lactonization of diketo acid derivatives using chiral iodoarenes as redox mediators is reported for the first time. Good to high stereoselectivities are observed in the lactonization and also in intermolecular α-alkoxylations of diketo ester derivatives. This enantioselective process was then adapted to an electrochemical flow microreactor where only small amounts of supporting electrolyte were necessary.

Sulfoxonium Ylide Derived Metal Carbenoids in Organic Synthesis

As pioneered by Corey and Chaykovsky, sulfoxonium ylides have had widespread application in organic synthesis for more than a half century. In most of the reactions, sulfoxonium ylides were used to react with electrophiles. Under suitable reaction conditions these ylides can generate metal carbenoids and react with nucleophiles. By combining the typical reactivity of sulfoxonium ylides with transition-metal catalysis, a growing number of investigations have expanded their application in organic synthesis. This review provides an update on the preparation of sulfoxonium ylides and their applications in carbenoid transfer reactions.

Cascade polyene cyclization reactions are highly efficient and elegant bioinspired transformations that involve simultaneous multiple bond constructions to rapidly generate complex polycyclic molecules. This review summarizes the most prominent work on a variety of cationic and radical cascade cyclizations and their applications in natural product synthesis published between 2014 and 2018.

Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Alkyl Heck-Type Reactions

The Heck reaction is one of the most reliable and useful strategies for the construction of C–C bonds in organic synthesis. However, in contrast to the well-established aryl Heck reaction, the analogous reaction employing alkyl electrophiles is much less developed. Significant progress in this area was recently achieved by merging radical-mediated and transition-metal-catalyzed approaches. This review summarizes the advances in alkyl Heck-type reactions from its discovery early in the 1970s up until the end of 2018.
